First off: I'm going to be started a new Segment: 'In other news' where I report on things that are irrelevant or asinine in nature.
So Apparently the government spends A LOT (emphasis on a lot) on Penis Pumps.... Who would've thought... I know... But the truth is stranger than fiction (usually the case...am I right?) and between 2006 and 2011 an estimated $172 million has been spent by our government in providing them (I guess they're a super-effective treatment for E.D. Erectile Dysfunction). Since this belongs in the category of 'Benign Government spending' I figured I'd report on it, make my opinion known and share both with you in an effort to encourage you to read the source article, laugh and draw conclusions to share with others....
The report by the inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services said Medicare, the government health insurance system for seniors, paid nearly 474,000 claims for vacuum erection systems, or VES, totaling about $172.4 million from 2006 to 2011. Yearly claims for the devices nearly doubled from $20.6 million in 2006 to $38.6 million in 2011.
According to the Mayo Clinic, penis pumps are one of a few treatment options for erectile dysfunction.
Government waste is a major issue in budget talks in the U.S. capital as lawmakers try to reach agreement on a $1 trillion spending bill.
Not to mention, this also provides me the opportunity to showcase an informative picture of a penis pump (intended to be for educational purposes not just crude humor)
