Day 5 (May 5th)
Destination: Hazel Falls
Length: 5.2 miles
Elevation: 950ft
Time: 11:20- 2:30
This whole trip we've been eating like kings so far. This may be the first trip since our first trip in 2017 that I actually am operating off of a caloric surplus, usually I lose weight due to traveling light and not over eating........well NOT THIS TRIP. Kevin has got super excited when we decided to have a base camp where we can have, well let's call them amenities. So every morning we got a fresh cup of coffee (followed by my personal cup of instant DEATH WISH coffee), and usually a small breakfast. Today was no different, they got to mow down on some bacon and eggs, and I had me some scrambled eggs, hash browns and RYE bread. It was DELICIOUS! I'm sure this isn't the only time mentioning the food on this trip but it was certainly and defnitely a memorable aspect.
The weather 'calmed down' since yesterday.....no more flash floods or hail, no super wind. Instead, today the simulation has loaded in the SILENT HILL texture pack and those are the vibes. The pictures don't convey how THICK this fog got and due to our elevation, it was always changing as clouds of different saturations rolled through.
I think this may be the closest I got to conveying what I was saying earlier about the fog density, once we rolled thru this patch visibility was about 10ft for a solid 10-15 mins. Needless to say, in an already slow park where the speed limit was 35mph, we still played it mega safe because you don't mess around on mountain roads in fog.
FINALLY! Here we are. The trailhead 11:20 was when we rolled into our parking space so it's a minor difference of MAYBE 5mins before we actually got our start
I got quotas to fill and lame jokes to thrill....all day....everyday....
Find out
We rolled up to the falls at about 12:30. We actually sat down for lunch upstream from all the gorgeous scenery but in hindsight it was prolly a good thing. Ended up running into a family at the swimming hole and they did not look thrilled to have us there, like AT ALL. Based off their demeanor and tattoos that def gave me GOOD OLE BOYS vibes I'm glad we didn't spend much time around them. But yeah....lunch... on a peace slab of rock next to a serene river.....ALWAYS A GOOD TIME.
Took a quick lunch because the clouds rolling in did not look promising, we had a steep ascension ahead of us, and we wanted to see the falls! When we got there there ended being a natural cave passge around the path and under/behind/next to the actual waterfall. In hindsight, this would've been the money shot of lunch spots but OH WELL, didn't mind our slice of paradise either
On our way back we happened upon another Cave in the rocks so NATURALLY I had to go and find out. What can I say.... it's what I do
What's a camping trip without an obligatory photo of somebody take a piss......
Aftyer exploring that shallow cave and doing our warm boyz tradition of finding out, we left and when we got outside it was drizzling. TIME TO HOOF IT!
The view of BIG MEADOWS is probably aweinspiring when the foliage is in full effect or bloom is at max, even today it was lovely.
He liked it don't let him fool you. The next few photos are from overlooks and views we pulled over to capture. If we were cruising and I saw a break in the forestry, I tried to snap a pic, the scale here is gargantuan and I'm not going to pass up the opportunity to capture the scope here.
